En general se trabaja con combustibles para mejorar el medio ambiente. Desde disminuir el contenido de azufre para cumplir con las normas ambientales (HDS) hasta mejorar las propiedades de los crudos para su mejor aprovechamiento para obtener productos valiosos. También se estudian los biocombustibles para el cuidado del medio ambiente y substitución de los combustibles fósiles.
